In the world of product development, every creation begins as a vision—a dream of crafting something exceptional, something that will leave an indelible mark. We had one simple question in our minds: How can we make the joy of painting more accessible to everyone, regardless of their skill level? The answer is to create a kit that not only guides aspiring artists but also made the creative process a breeze. We envisioned a product that would ignite creativity while eliminating the initial intimidation of starting with a blank canvas. With the help of state-of-the-art technology, our concept of creating a painting kit with professionally printed canvas was born.
Following the self-help book for entrepreneurs, 12 Months to $1 Million by Ryan Daniel Moran, I decided to create the first prototype that presented the initial look and feel of the product. It is through this process, I realized I have a lot to learn about painting. My initial thought was to include a 8x10 canvas, a pack of brushes, and six 2-oz bottles of paint, which turned out to be an overkill. The initial box looks like this:
As you can see, I couldn't even fit six 2-oz bottles, not to mention that an 8x10 canvas only needs a total of 2-oz of paint to cover entirely. However, this was a good enough representation of the product for me to solicited feedback from friends and family. While I collected feedback, I was also iterating on the size of paint and the content of the box.
Prototyping is an iterative process. With each revision of the first prototype, we fine-tuned the details, making improvements and asthethic enhancements based on feedback and insights. It was a journey of learning, experimentation, and creative problem-solving.
Not only do I want the box to contain the necessary items for the customers to start painting, I also want the customers to see the beautiful and vibrant colors upon opening the package. Eventually, I decided on the 1-oz clear containers for the first prototype.
With the first version of the prototype box ready, it was time to do some product testing to get some user feedback. Stay tuned as we embark on this next chapter, where we take our first kits to friends and family shared this painting experience with them, one brushstroke at a time.
